Tanzania Yellow Fever Requirements

Tanzania Wildlife Voyages understands that yellow fever requirements for Tanzania can sometimes be a bit unclear—but don’t worry, we’re here to guide you! Tanzania is considered a yellow fever-free country, making it a safe destination in terms of avoiding this virus. On this page, you’ll find clear answers to all your questions about the yellow fever virus and whether you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination before visiting Tanzania.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania?

Great news: most travelers visiting this stunning country do not need the yellow fever vaccine! According to the World Health Organization’s classification, Tanzania is currently considered a low-risk area for yellow fever. If you’re coming from a country where yellow fever is not a risk, then this vaccine is not required as part of your travel vaccinations with Tanzania Wildlife Voyages.

What is yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes. Symptoms usually appear within 3 to 6 days and may include fever, chills, headaches, and muscle aches. While many cases are mild, about 15% of those infected can develop severe or potentially life-threatening complications.

Tanzania is considered free from yellow fever. Therefore, if you’re traveling directly from Europe or the United States, Tanzania Wildlife Voyages advises that you are not required to receive a yellow fever vaccination.

Yellow Fever Vaccination Requirement

Proof of yellow fever vaccination is only necessary upon arrival in Tanzania if you are traveling from a country considered at risk for the virus. Currently, this list does not include any countries in Europe or the United States. (You can view the complete list of yellow fever high-risk countries.)

However, an important note: If you have a layover or transit through a yellow fever high-risk country for 12 hours or more, you will be required to present proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival. If your journey to Tanzania includes such a stop, Tanzania Wildlife Voyages strongly recommends consulting your doctor and reviewing the relevant vaccination requirements with a healthcare provider before your departure.

Receiving the yellow fever vaccination

Yellow fever vaccination is administered as a single dose and must be taken at least 10 days prior to entering any country classified as high-risk for yellow fever. This one-time vaccine offers lifelong protection against the virus. Be sure to obtain an official proof of vaccination from your healthcare provider. If yellow fever vaccination is a requirement for your travel, you’ll be asked to present this certificate upon your arrival in Tanzania.

If your doctor advises against receiving the vaccine due to medical conditions or other health-related concerns, you can still travel to Tanzania by presenting an official exemption letter. This letter, when shown to immigration officials, can waive the vaccination requirement and allow your trip to proceed smoothly.
