Zanzibar Holiday

Picture yourself on a dream escape to the tropical haven of Zanzibar. This idyllic island is a true paradise, home to some of the world’s most stunning beaches and vibrant coral reefs. Endless stretches of powdery white sand lined with swaying palms meet the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Beyond the tranquil beach life, Zanzibar boasts a rich cultural heritage and captivating history. A visit to Stone Town is a must—this enchanting old city is filled with lively markets, delightful restaurants, and fascinating historical landmarks.

Zanzibar Island belongs to the wider Zanzibar archipelago, alongside Pemba, Mafia, and numerous smaller islets. Collectively known as the Spice Islands, their legacy in the spice trade is reflected in the many thriving spice plantations. They make for the perfect beach getaway to relax and rejuvenate after an adventurous safari.

Beaches of Zanzibar

Zanzibar is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking beaches. Picture-perfect stretches of soft, white sand bordered by vibrant coral reefs and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The island boasts around 25 beaches, many dotted with traditional fishing villages. The big question is—should you stay in the north, or explore the south and east coasts of Zanzibar?

North:
The island’s finest beaches are found along the northern and eastern shores, offering dazzling white sands and colourful coral reefs. Among the favourites are Nungwi and Kendwa, where tides have little effect, making swimming possible throughout the day. This area has a lively yet relaxed vibe, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and accommodation. If you’re seeking complete peace and seclusion, the quieter eastern and southern parts of the island may suit you better. The north is also home to charming villages such as Uroa, Pongwe, Kiwengwa, Nungwi, and Kendwa.

East:
The eastern coast is where you’ll discover some of Zanzibar’s most postcard-worthy beaches. A spectacular coral reef runs parallel to the shore, making it one of the world’s top spots for snorkelling and diving. Expect encounters with an incredible array of marine life, from seahorses and turtles to colourful tropical fish. These beaches are tidal, meaning during low tide you can stroll across the sands and admire sweeping ocean views. For windsurfing or kitesurfing enthusiasts, this coast is perfect. Matemwe beach, the island’s longest, stands out as one of its most stunning stretches. Like the north, it also offers a wide range of accommodation.

South-East:
Renowned for its long ribbons of soft sand, this part of the island is ideal for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing thanks to its steady breezes. You can board a traditional dhow (wooden sailboat) and glide across the ocean, or head south to Kizimkazi for the chance to swim with dolphins. Villages such as Jambiani, Paje, and Bwejuu line this coast, each with a timeless charm and welcoming atmosphere. Jambiani, in particular, stands out as a favourite. Discover what makes this village a must-visit gem of Zanzibar.

South-West:
The southwest coast feels more remote, with fewer lodges and serene, uncrowded beaches. Though less frequented than the north and east, this area offers hidden gems with calm tides. A highlight here is Menai Bay Conservation Area, a remarkable marine haven perfect for diving. On the western side, you’ll also find Stone Town—the historic and cultural heart of Zanzibar, rich with heritage and character.

Ideal Time to Explore Zanzibar

The best time to explore Zanzibar is typically in the dry season, which runs from June to October and again from December to February. That said, the island remains a fantastic beach destination throughout the year. Even in the rainy months (mid-March, April, May, and November), Zanzibar retains its charm—showers are usually brief, lasting no more than half an hour, while temperatures hover around 28°C. February tends to be the warmest month (average 28°C), whereas July is the coolest (average 24°C). Thanks to its tropical climate, Zanzibar is welcoming at any time of year.

Zanzibar Accommodations

Zanzibar provides a wide variety of lodges, hotels, and resorts—ranging from simple stays to high-end luxury. Tanzania Wild Life Voyages is familiar with most of the island’s accommodations, so you can always reach out for guidance. We particularly appreciate the warm and intimate vibe of the smaller bed & breakfast lodges. The staff are exceptionally welcoming and go above and beyond to ensure you enjoy your stay. Another advantage of choosing bed & breakfasts is the freedom to discover different restaurants and bars throughout the day and evening. The island offers countless wonderful spots to dine or enjoy a drink, often paired with stunning ocean views and a delightful atmosphere.

Zanzibar vacation reviews

“Zanzibar is an amazing and picturesque island. I stayed in the village of Jambiani, where the locals are incredibly warm and welcoming. They’re always happy to chat. The beaches, spice plantations, forests, and small villages are truly stunning. The only downside I noticed was the limited number of museums—though it’s possible I just didn’t visit the right spots. There are plenty of lovely restaurants and bars on the island where you can enjoy delicious local or international dishes and dance the night away.”

Roos

“Zanzibar is a must-visit beach destination when traveling to Tanzania. It’s like paradise and the ideal place to relax after a safari. We stayed on the east coast of the island, where the beaches are breathtaking. They’re also wonderfully quiet, with no hassle from beach vendors. We enjoyed fantastic seafood at several restaurants, all at very reasonable prices.”
