Kilimanjaro via Machame route - 6 Days Climbing (+ 2 days in a hotel)

The Machame Route is often regarded as one of the most beautiful climbing routes in the world — and for good reason! It offers breathtaking views of Mount Meru, an exciting climb along the Barranco Wall, and many other stunning highlights along the way. The trail is well-maintained, and one of its unique features is that it follows a different path for the ascent and descent, allowing you to experience more of Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes.

The Machame Route with Tanzania Wildlife Voyages typically takes six days to complete, though a seven-day itinerary is also available to help your body acclimatize better to the altitude. We highly recommend adding this extra day, as it significantly improves your chances of reaching the summit. In the seven-day version, you’ll spend an additional acclimatization day hiking between Barranco Camp and Barafu Camp — making day five of this route align with days five and six of the Lemosho Route.

TANZANIA WILDLIFE VOYAGES offers a unique service throughout the climb

Climbing Kilimanjaro is the ultimate adventure! Every detail matters — and with Tanzania Wildlife Voyages, you’ll be guided by professional mountain experts, skilled porters, and an experienced cook who ensure your comfort and safety throughout the Machame route ascent. It might sound like a lot, but it’s exactly what you need to successfully reach the summit! Machame Route (1/6) | Machame Gate (1,800 m/5,905 ft) - Machame Camp (2,835 m/9,301 ft)

Machame Gate

On the first morning, your guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the Machame Gate. The trail begins through lush coffee and banana plantations, followed by a pristine, vibrant rainforest. After hiking for about five to six hours, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp, located on the border between the forest and the heather zone. Since this is your first day at a higher altitude, make sure to stay well-hydrated!

Day 3

Machame route (2/6) | Machame Camp (2,835 m/9,301 ft) to Shira Camp (3,839 m/12,595 ft)

Shira Camp

On the second day of the climb, the trail begins with a slightly steeper ascent. The route passes a small circular cliff called Picnic Rock, offering breathtaking views of Kibo and Shira — two of Kilimanjaro’s iconic peaks. From Picnic Rock, you continue hiking along a scenic path to reach Shira Camp, where you’ll enjoy lunch and take some time to rest. For those who wish, Tanzania Wildlife Voyages offers an optional acclimatization hike toward the Lava Tower, reaching an altitude of 4,630 meters over a distance of about 2 km.

Barranco Camp

From Shira Camp, the route takes you to the stunning Lava Tower, passing through a series of ascents and descents with breathtaking scenery along the way. At Lava Tower, you’ll pause for lunch and rest for about one to two hours to help your body acclimatize to the higher altitude, as the sudden elevation gain may cause some discomfort. Afterwards, you descend to Barranco Camp. Keep an eye out for the unique giant flowering plants that can grow up to five meters tall! Barranco Camp sits at the base of the magnificent Barranco Wall, known for its impressive height and steep cliffs — a true highlight of the journey with Tanzania Wildlife Voyages.

Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you’ll leave Barranco Camp and begin your trek toward the Barranco Wall. After a challenging yet rewarding climb, you’ll reach the top and be greeted with stunning views — the majestic Kibo volcano on your left and the distant Mount Meru on your right. The trail then continues with several ascents and descents through Karanga Camp before you finally arrive at Barafu Camp — your last stop before the summit! Enjoy a warm meal, take some rest, and prepare for your final ascent.

Day 6

Millennium Camp

Today’s the big day! Around midnight, you’ll begin your ascent from Barafu Camp toward Uhuru Peak. The trail is well-defined, but the real challenge lies in the high altitude. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise — a truly unforgettable sight at this elevation! After spending some time at the top to celebrate your remarkable achievement, you’ll gradually descend to the picturesque Millennium Camp.

Day 7

Machame route (6/6) | Millennium Camp (3,820 m/12,532 ft) - Mweka Gate (1,640 m/5,380 ft) - Hotel

Mweka Gate

Millennium Camp lies within a lush tropical rainforest. As you wake up today, the lower altitude brings a sense of relief and fulfilment after conquering the summit. After enjoying breakfast, you take a relaxed walk toward the park’s exit.

Your driver will then transfer you back to the hotel for a well-earned rest!
