Kilimanjaro via Marangu route - 5 days climbing
(+ 2 days in a hotel)

The Marangu route is one of the most frequently chosen trails and is also the most budget-friendly option. It is the only Kilimanjaro trail that provides hut accommodation instead of tents for overnight stays. The path goes directly up to the summit and returns along the same way. Because the elevation gains per day are quite steep, this trail is best suited for trekkers with prior high-altitude hiking experience.

The standard Marangu climb through Tanzania Wildlife Voyages usually takes five days. However, adding an extra day for acclimatization is highly recommended to help the body adapt to the altitude. This optional additional night is taken at Horombo huts on day four, along with an acclimatization hike. Taking this extra day considerably boosts the likelihood of a successful summit.

Tanzania Wildlife Voyages offers a unique service throughout the climb

Conquering Kilimanjaro is the adventure of a lifetime! On such an expedition, even the smallest details matter — and with Tanzania Wildlife Voyages, you are guided by experienced mountain leaders, supported by skilled porters and a dedicated cook. Throughout your Marangu route ascent, our team looks after you, conducting health checks twice daily and preparing wholesome meals. Does that sound excessive? Not when your goal is the summit! Altitude sickness often strikes silently, and proper nutrition is vital to maintain strength during a demanding climb.

In addition, Tanzania Wildlife Voyages provides a detailed preparation kit for those trekking the Marangu route. This includes valuable insights about Tanzania and Mount Kilimanjaro, training tips, and guidance on what gear to buy or rent before your trip. We are also proud partners of the Kilimanjaro Responsible Travel Organisation (KRTO), ensuring ethical treatment of our crew and environmental care of the mountain. So you climb not only safely — but also responsibly. Ready for a once-in-a-lifetime journey?

dAY 2

Marangu Route (1/5) | Marangu Gate (1,860 m/6,102 ft) - Mandara Huts (2,720 m/8,923 ft)

On the first morning, a Tanzania Wildlife Voyages guide will transfer you from your hotel to the Marangu Gate. The initial stretch of the trek passes through lush coffee and banana farms before entering an untouched rainforest zone. After about seven hours of hiking, you will arrive at the Mandara Huts. Later in the afternoon, you can either take an optional walk to the nearby Maundi Crater — a small volcanic crater close to the huts — or simply relax and soak in the scenic surroundings. Since this is your first day at higher elevation, be sure to stay well hydrated!

Day 3

Marangu Route (2/5) | Mandara Huts (2,720 m/8,923 ft) - Horombo Huts (3,720 m/12,204 ft)

Huts

From Mandara Huts onward, the scenery gradually transitions from lush cloud forest to open grasslands dotted with heather and sparse foliage. As the ascent continues, vegetation becomes scarcer and the surroundings begin to resemble a barren, moon-like terrain. The air also grows noticeably thinner at this stage. A few hours after lunch, Tanzania Wildlife Voyages typically arranges an acclimatisation hike climbing about 200 meters before returning to Horombo Huts for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4

Marangu Route (3/5) | Horombo Huts (3,720 m/12,204 ft) - Kibo Huts Camp (4,720 m/15,485 ft)

Kibo Hut

Today’s trek takes you through an Alpine-desert terrain, leading to the stretch that lies between the iconic peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The walk is demanding and crosses open, exposed landscapes with little natural cover. You’ll reach Kibo Camp in time for lunch and then rest to conserve energy for the major ascent awaiting you tomorrow with Tanzania Wildlife Voyages.

Day 5

Marangu Route (4/5) | Kibo Huts (4,720 m/15,485 ft) - Uhuru Peak (5,895 m/19,340 ft) - Horombo Huts (3,720 m/12,204 ft)

uhuru peak

In the dead of night, you begin your push to Uhuru Peak using your headlamp to guide the way. The toughest part of this final climb is the initial stretch leading up to Gilman’s Point. After reaching there, the trail to Uhuru Peak is shorter and comparatively less demanding. From the summit, you will witness a breathtaking sunrise — truly spectacular at this altitude! After enjoying and celebrating your accomplishment at the top, you descend back via Kibo Huts Camp and continue down to the Horombo Huts, where dinner and an overnight rest await. Altogether, you’ll be trekking for roughly twelve hours today — a long, demanding, but incredibly rewarding day with Tanzania Wildlife Voyages.

Day 6

Marangu Route (5/5) | Horombo Huts (3,720 m/12,204 ft) - Marangu Gate (1,860 m/6,102 ft) - hotel

Marangu Gate

On your last day on the mountain, you will trek down to the Marangu Gate — the official exit point of Kilimanjaro National Park. The descent takes about five to six hours as you pass through the lush, scenic forests surrounding Kilimanjaro. Afterward, your Tanzania Wildlife Voyages guide will escort you back to your hotel for a much-needed and well-earned rest.
