A little extra comfort

The Marangu route is the only Kilimanjaro trail that provides hut accommodations instead of tents, making it ideal if you want to climb without having to sleep outdoors.

Trekkers stay in dorm-style bunk beds — Mandara and Kibo Huts each offer 60 bunks, while Horombo Hut has 120. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag; the rest is arranged for you. Expect basic mattresses and pillows, shared dining halls for all trekkers, and simple washroom facilities. In some huts, you may even find flushing toilets and running water — quite a pleasant surprise on a mountain trek!

There are also small shops along the way selling snacks, soft drinks, and bottled water. This is why the Marangu route is popularly known as the “Coca-Cola Route” — an easy conversation starter among fellow hikers.
